If you have any presidential ambitions then you should NEVER accept an appointment to public office (Vice- President, Minister or Speaker of the House) under the 1997 Constitution. It is a political suicide trap, and this is exactly the reason why Halipha Sallah was very wise turning down the offer in 2017. Lawyer Darboe had the choice to either reject the Cabinet appointments like Halipha OR resign his public office before getting terminated. He chose to stay and get himself fired.
Gambian Vice-Presidents are not indirectly elected like in the US. They are appointed as principal assistants and next in line of succession in case the president is incapacitated. This makes the incumbent president extremely vulnerable to strategic behavior from a disloyal number two. And this is why The Gambia constitution mitigates such vulnerability with provisions that are quite punitive to unbridled ambitions that may potentially undermine the president’s future electoral opportunities. If you know that you cannot serve a president wholeheartedly with utmost sincerity and honesty then either resign or don’t ever accept a political appointment.
